Air Quality Diffusion Tube
Air quality is one social factor that can impact on health. Where you live in London determines the quality of your air. People living on low incomes, and of African, Caribbean, Asian, Latin American heritage are three times more likely to live in high air pollution neighbourhoods.
An example of this is 9-year-old Ella Kissi Debrah. She was the first person to have air pollution legally noted as the cause of her death.
Ella was from the Borough of Lewisham, a borough that is home to many people of African and Caribbean descent living on low incomes. It is also a borough that regularly exceeds air pollution limits.
Nitrogen dioxide levels, mainly from diesel vehicles around Ella's home were consistently 3 times higher than the legal limit of 40µg/m3
